Team Penske Has The Field Surrounded At Milwaukee
- Updated: May 30, 2009
WEST ALLIS, WI: Team Penske experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows Saturday at the Milwaukee Mile during time trials for tomorrow’s ABC Supply-AJ Foyt 225 Indy Racing League event.
Defending Milwaukee winner Ryan Briscoe captured the pole position for Team Penske at America’s Legendary Oval by recording a four lap average of 168.394 MPH. Briscoe barely edged out last years top qualifier Graham Rahal, whose speed of 168.117 MPH earned the #2 starting position.
Near the end of the session, Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves took a shot at his teammate’s pole speed, but instead found the Safer Barrier at the exit of turn two on his first qualifying lap. Castroneves, the victim of an apparent gust of wind, climbed from the car uninjured…but unsmiling.
Tomorrow, Team Penske will have the field surrounded, with Briscoe starting #1, and Castroneves bringing up the rear.
Rookie Stanton Barrett was the only entrant unable to post a qualifying speed. Following the disappointment of being bumped from the Indy 500 two weeks ago, Barrett lost control of his CURB/Agajanian Spl. In morning practice and hit the fence leaving turn two. With only limited spare parts available, the team was forced to pack up and head for home. With luck, Barrett will renew his open-wheel career next week at Texas.
